Chapters 23-30

These chapters revealed several details about Jim’s life and his family. I think Jim may also being going through a battle of social responsibility himself. On one hand, it is typically a man’s right to support and protect his family. By running away, he is running away from his responsibilities as a man and as a father. He has expressed this guilt festering inside him by replaying the time he hit his daughter over and over again in his head. Although running away is leading him to a life of freedom, he won’t be that free without his family. I think he’s questioning his role in society. With all this free time of thinking and having actual time to sort his thoughts, Jim is questioning everything and anything. He knows it is not his social responsibility to be a slave to white people, but is that something you have to do in order to protect your family?

  1. Raven, nice ideas but I wish you had tied it a little more specifically to the literature.

  2. Ooh I really like this idea! I haven't really thought of social responsibility referring to Jim but you are absolutely right. Jim has tons of responsibility! I think maybe Jim isn't to blame for wanting to run away but during this time wasn't it his responsibility to stay? Not just for his family but for his owners. Now I know this sounds completely horrible but I'm just thinking of the setting and time period. So does Jim really have the "responsibility" or the "right" to be free? From the way I've read and interpreted it, I don't think Huck believes so.

  3. That was a really goo idea about Jim running from his family responsibility. Through the book i was thinking about how Jim seemed to be the perfect picture of understanding what should be right and should be wrong. But like you said, his role in his family is not exactly perfect.
That really was a great thought.

  4. Great observation Raven! I see Jim to actually be one of those people who solves problems for others but not his own. Atleast he doesnt handle his own probs properly. He is like a scandalous Dr.Phil lol. But I must say I do not agree with him running away from something that happened in the past for a mistake. Rather than slapping his daughter and runnning he should of held her and comforted her.
